日本借用中古汉语要素创造的新词，是由漫 (man, “随意的”) +‎ 画 (ga, “图片”)组成的复合字。[1]首次出现是在1798年由山东京伝绘制的图画书《四时交加 (Shīshi Kōga)》，那时已经使用了现代的汉字拼法“漫画”。[2]
