作为名词最早见于1785年。通过西印度群岛皮钦语借自法语 savez(-vous) (“你知道吗”), 葡萄牙语 (você) sabe (“你知道”)或西班牙语 (usted) sabe (“你知道”),源自通俗拉丁语 *sapere ← 拉丁语 sapere (“智慧的,知道”) (参见sapient)。形容词最早见于1905年。
